Description

Figure of eight, one inch webbing. Create luggage attachment points from existing bike parts.

I wanted a set of simple pannier bags but couldn't find what I needed. Bugger it, I'll make my own I thought. No frills just tough and simple to use. The logical idea was to borrow off bicycle panniers and make them roll top. That way, they could provide variable volume but not increase the width of the bike. In reality they have changed little from the original prototypes I made. Over the years and with the help of feedback from users I have refined the design to make them as tough and easy to use as I can.

Andy

Expedition Pannierz Info
  • Proven by hundreds of Aussie adventure riders in possibly the toughest environment on earth. (Read more)
  • Constructed of heavy weight, truck side, polyester reinforced Aussie canvas they will last for ages. Made to withstand the punishment that dual sport bikes or the serious tourer hands out.
  • Variable capacity from about 15 to 25 litres per bag via a roll top system, increasing the volume of the bag but not the width of the bike.
  • Light — these things weigh only 2 kg. Complete with my frame sets the whole package weighs in at around 4 kg! That's the weight of one hard box!

Now with reflective strips on each pocket.

  - Stiffening in the roll top seals off the bags from dust and water.

- Clever touches such as a small strap that loops through grab rails or rack to prevent the bags vibrating forward over rough road.

- Mesh pocket on the rear panel for water or oil bottles.

- Hard plastic internal panel for rigidity and strength.

- Stiffened tops for accurate closing.

- Cut so that water runs down the outer edges and drips off, there are no catch points.

- Sturdily constructed, double stitched (triple in vital places) and beautifully finished.

- Specially reinforced cross straps.

- Quality Acetel nylon side release clips rated at 300kg.

- Rear securing straps to stop vibration forward on rough roads.

Please Note
Four Pocket Expedition Pannierz have been replaced by Avduro Pannierz

Hard panniers pose a leg injury risk in a fall and are difficult to repair on the road. Damage to Expedition Pannierz from a fall can be fixed in almost any small village anywhere in the world. Try that with alloy boxes. Have you ever seen the contents of an alloy box after it has rattled along a bush track for an hour or two? A coating of black dust covers everything. A simple fall can stuff catches and lids. They are also very heavy and require a heavy frame to support them.

Security is the downside of soft panniers there is no getting away from that. One solution that allows the best of both worlds is the Pacsafe mesh system.  Click here for the page.

The weight of my Pannierz is taken over the seat and rear subframe.

A pair of the Expedition Pannierz took Ted “Jupiter’s Travels” Simon halfway around the world.
As he said “ the panniers were truly great”

Here is what a happy customer in the US wrote on his ADV post.
"BTW, which bag do you like better the Andy Strapz or Dirt Bagz?

I'll try to be diplomatic in my response, but the bottom line is that halfway through the two weeks crossing the dusty Great Basin desert, my wife was about ready to douse the Dirt Bagz in gasoline and torch them. The zippers were getting jammed, it was cumbersome to get things in and out... Your bags perform so much better; it's really an eye-opener to see the two of them in action side-by-side.

Anyway, I promised her that when we returned I'd work some overtime and specifically dedicate the proceeds to upgrading her panniers. So there it is. Thanks for remembering that I'd ordered before".

  • Maniacs please note
To give your Expedition Pannierz more support while flying through the air or ripping corrugations apart I recommend a strap around the base of the bags. This holds them against the frames more securely. Naturally, I reckon that a 1250 Flat Strap is the best way to go.

Most bikes will need a simple rail to keep the Expedition Pannierz from contacting the wheel and exhausts. The frame needs only to be a light rod or tube rail on most bikes. We recommend that you buy the Expedition Pannierz before you build your frames to make sure they fit exactly where you want.

Many OEM and aftermarket frames will do fine but try to make them angle away from the bike at the bottom to get the best results. Soft bags don't like to hang straight down. Many will need my Extensions as they sit off the bike a lot further than my designs.

Why use my frames?
In short mine are made exactly to suit my pannierz. They cant out from the vertical at the bottom to give better support. You'll notice hard pannier frame sets are vertical, being designed to clip boxes onto. Soft Panniers of all kinds need angled support for the best result.

Mine are light weight. A set typically weighs between 1.6 and 2 kg. Add a set of Expedition Pannierz and the whole set up weighs around 4 kg! Most after market frames (just the frames) for boxes weigh in the region of 5 to 6 kg. view frames page
